TDF, major French broadcaster and network operator, wanted to experiment a VOD service over the French DTT network, capable of reaching 100% of French homes, especially homes not eligible for broadband connectivity.
QuadriCast™ is deployed in a limited number of homes nationwide.
In the wee hours of the night, TDF sends SD and HD content as digital files over the network from providers TF1, France Télévisions, Arte and NRJ12.
Files are then stored on a dedicated space on the hard drive of DTT STBs.
Files are transferred at a bitrate of 1 to 2 Mb/s, in order to limit perturbations on the normal flow of the multiplex (24Mb/s).
Programs (about a hundred total) are available on the STB for a limited time and renewed frequently (about 30 each week). Customers receive their access rights from a chip card inserted in the STB and can select a program from a catalog and watch it immediately.
