BFBS offers MiPlayer welfare solution to new markets

Improving the welfare of personnel is critical to tackling recruitment and retention challenges.
The British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), best known for its TV and radio services, is offering its MiPlayer system to international customers to improve the welfare of personnel.

MiPlayer is a cyber-secure system that allows armed forces personnel to watch and read content on their personal devices through various networks without using the internet.

MiPlayer works by transmitting content packages to ships or forward locations via traditional broadcast signals, meaning traffic is one-way, negating the cybersecurity risks of two-way transmissions.

The system is already used by the UK RN and other elements of the armed forces, but the company is now looking to export it to international customers.

South America is seen as an emerging potential market for the welfare tool, given the close relationship between the UK RN and forces like those of Brazil and Chile.

The solution takes up minimal space onboard ships, requiring a server rack and a way of receiving information.

Personnel can then access content from MiPlayer using their personal devices over a network chosen by the customer, which could be WiFi or 5G, among others.

Access is controlled using IP protocols, meaning sailors can access the system through a browser rather than downloading an app.

BFBS touts that the system does not use the internet as another benefit, as it does not use up personal data allowances.

BFBS development and strategy director Nick Beer told Shephard that the solution improves the welfare of personnel by giving them access to content at a time that suits them rather than having to watch what is provided in common areas.

Beer added that the system was factored into the RN’s upcoming City-class Type 26 frigate design.

MiPlayer is also installed onboard the research ship RRS David Attenborough and deployed widely for military and civilian use in the Falkland Islands.

Personnel can use the system to watch live TV and radio, read magazines and newspapers and access content on demand. The solution reflects an understanding that armed forces personnel want to be able to consume media on deployment in a similar way that they would at home.

BFBS is also working on how MiPlayer could improve the welfare provision for sailors on board submarines, including the future Dreadnought-class SSBN.

Improving welfare provision of the armed forces is key to helping services improve recruitment and retention challenges.

BFBS developed MiPlayer in-house to improve the services it provides to the UK MoD under a large overarching contract.

As BFBS is a charity, any profits from selling MiPlayer to overseas forces would be used to improve services, Beer added.
